What to expect in our first session

What to expect in our first session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. For many of us, the very first therapeutic session can bring up a mix of emotions, curiosity, hope and nerves. This is completely normal. In fact, feeling anxious before starting something new is often a signal that you’re doing something meaningful and important.

This resource will walk you through what happens in a first therapy session at Daylight Psychology Studio, so you can feel more prepared and supported as you take that step towards better mental health.

A Warm Welcome

Our first session is all about getting to know your story. There’s no pressure to share everything at once. Instead, think of it as a conversation in a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly and at your own pace. This first session is designed to help you feel comfortable.

It’s Okay to Feel Nervous

Almost everyone feels some level of nerves before their first therapy session. You might wonder what to say, or worry about how it will feel. That’s completely valid. If those feelings come up, you’re welcome to name them in the room. Therapy has space for your nerves as well as your goals.

If you live with anxiety, stress, or overwhelm, it’s important to know that you’re not alone, and therapy is a supportive place to work through these challenges.

Your Story

As your psychologist, I’ll ask gentle clinically informed questions to better understand what’s going on for you. Importantly we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.

Together, we’ll talk about what brought you to therapy and what you’d like to work on. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Many clients come to therapy for anxiety, stress management, relationships, self-esteem, or general mental health support. Your goals shape the work we do together.

Collaboration and Planning

We’ll discuss possible approaches (like, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), or mindfulness strategies), and shape a plan together. Think of it as a roadmap: flexible, collaborative, and designed to support your unique needs.

Before the session ends, we’ll reflect on what we talked about and plan next steps. My aim is for you to leave feeling supported, with a clearer sense of direction

Final Reminder: You Matter

Your first session is simply the beginning of a process, a chance to feel heard and understood, nerves and all. Reaching out for support takes courage, and it matters. You matter. There will be moments of reflection, and sometimes laughter too. Sessions can hold both seriousness and lightness, space for big feelings, and space for ease.
